This course is an introduction to the ideas and processes used in the production of contemporary art and design. Under the guidance of a tutor, you will engage in activities such as drawing, painting and making 3D objects, take part in supportive discussions and make use of the excellent library and learning resources at Leeds College of Art. You will develop your understanding of contemporary art and design and have the opportunity to understand more about art history. This course will help you to develop your personal artistic interests, discover new artists and designers and gain an understanding of why artists make work in particular ways. Teaching is informal and encouraging. New starters are welcome each term if there is space in the class. This is a class for those who are interested in art and design and wish to further their knowledge and appreciation of it. Students with absolutely no experience of art are as welcome as those who have been dipping a toe in art’s turbulent waters but haven’t quite plucked up the courage to dive in yet. The content of sessions will vary from week to week and from term to term. In each 10 week course there will be some practical activities, some reading and some sketchbook work. As part of your experience you will be encouraged to visit exhibitions around Leeds independently or you could sign up for our guided gallery visits on Saturdays to enhance your learning. You will make drawings, paintings, photographs, videos and objects. You will need to do some research work outside class time in a notebook/sketchbook throughout the course. If you take all three 10 week courses you will have access to a broad spectrum of art and design issues. One 10 week course would provide you with a taster.
