Course Description
The Architectural Technology degree comprises the specialisation of architectural design and the science or innovation of building. This is underpinned by an expertise in the technology, management and legal aspects of construction. Architectural Technologists work on widely varying types of design problems including commercial, industrial, retail, leisure and residential projects and these may involve new- build, adaptation, restoration maintenance or interiors. Some graduates go on to deal with architecture within the urban context and issues of planning and regeneration. To enable students to best meet these varying challenges, they will be set a number of design projects throughout the course and may undertake these in groups or on an individual basis. In addition there is scope for students to specialise in a particular area of design, eg. buildings for health, 'environmentally friendly' architecture or urban design solutions. Students are able to further develop a specialism through option subjects which include: urban design, project management, architectural theory and history and facilities management. Graduates of this degree programme will be able to pursue a career as an Architectural Technologist in private practice or the public sector with the ability to run their own design projects. There is recognition in the wider community of the quality of this course and its progression to career pathways. The programme is officially 'recognised' by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT).
