Course Description
This course is for people who are interested in historic buildings, architectural heritage and historic towns. Architectural heritage has fascinated succeeding generations of scholars and members of the public equally. It ranges from humble traditional cottages in rural areas, to landmark buildings like great cathedrals and palaces. It also ranges from picturesque semi-ruined medieval buildings to stark modernist twentieth century buildings. What all these buildings have in common is that they have been identified as being special and in need of protection; because they represent the artistic and technological achievement(s) of previous generations and they also tell us something about how we used to live and who we are. The challenge today is what do we do with these buildings in order that we can pass them on to future generations? This course is for people who would like to work in this field. The course is recognised by the Institute for Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) and it has been designed to enable students to develop the competencies recommended by ICOMOS. The course is also accredited by the RICS. Heritage and conservation includes architectural history, building conservation, conservation philosophy, heritage interpretation, materials science, surveying buildings/building archaeology and town planning law & policy. As a discipline it overlaps with architectural history, architecture, archaeology, building surveying, heritage studies, town planning/ development control and tourism. The course will provide you with a broad introduction to the heritage disciplines and the work they undertake. In this way you will be able to develop your own knowledge and skills base. It will also provide you with the opportunity to focus your study on the aspects that most interest you, so that you can graduate with a qualification that equips you to make the sort of contribution to building conservation you want to make.
