This course allows students to combine archaeology (the study of material culture) and history (the study of written sources) in exploring the human past; the programme introduces the unique discipline of historical archaeology, focusing principally on the period 400 CE to the present day.
Stage 1: Introduces the basic principles and theories of archaeology in Britain, looking in particular at the archaeology of Roman, Saxon, Viking, medieval and post-medieval Britain; students also learn the scientific methods used to study ancient environments and artefacts; history modules cover the work of historians and look at important themes in the human past from prehistory to recent times; at the end of stages 1 and 2 students complete 2 weeks of compulsory excavation experience. Stage 2: Students continue with historical archaeology and fieldwork plus a wide range of options which include: early churches in Europe; the rise and fall of Atlantic slavery; and environmental history. Stage 3: Dissertation that integrates the study of historical documents with the study of excavated material remains.
