This degree programme covers the art and material culture of Europe, the Mediterranean region and Africa from the third millennium BC to the present; this course is a broadly based educational course with varied career prospects, but does not offer as much fieldwork training as single honours archaeology and is therefore less suitable for students wanting to become field archaeologists.
Year 1: Core modules; introduction to European archaeology; archaeological perspectives; works in focus 1; works in focus 2; plus choices taken from archaeological and art history module listings. Year 2: Modules may include; introduction to African archaeology; Roman Britain; aspects of Neolithic and Bronze Age in Atlantic Europe; interpreting the past (anthropological perspectives; Greek art; contemporary art; theory and philosophy of archaeology; perspectives in art history; knowledge of the discipline of art history and visual studies. Year 3: Modules may include; the archaeology of Islam; nationalism, heritage and identity; Greek theatre and its images; Greek mythology and visual narrative; art since 1945; collectors and collecting; Romano-British art and architecture; dissertation.
