This course provides an introduction to the development of archaeology as an academic subject; major cultural developments in the past (examination of discoveries of ancient civilisations from the Mediterranean to the Near East and India, prehistoric communities, the Roman world, medieval and early modern Britain); practical and scientific methods deployed by archaeologists; practically based dissertation; scientific methods in archaeology; approaches, methods and objectives; wide range of options; fieldwork: 3 weeks excavation during first summer vacation; at least a further 3 weeks excavation during the course (single honours).
