Anyone in permanent employment as a carpenter and/or joiner and able, over the period of the course to produce suitable and sufficient evidence to gain the NVQ. The employer will have to commit to allowing the student to attend College for one day per week or two evenings per week and provide witness statements as necessary. To progress on to NVQ Level 3 you must have completed the NVQ level 2. Apprenticeship: The course, which focuses on practical activity but includes some written theory and portfolio building, consists of the following mandatory units: Store materials and equipment, Erect & dismantle basic working platforms and Work efficiently. Plus for the Site Carpentry option: First fix before plasterwork, Second fixing after plasterwork, Carcassing for floors and roofs and use portable power tools. For the bench joinery route: Use portable power tools, produce setting out details, Mark out joinery and produce joinery products. Students will have to pass a practical phase test, an externally set knowledge test and a health & safety test. The student will also gather evidence, mainly from the workplace, and be assessed against the requirements of the NVQ. (These reflect the units listed above). Advanced Apprenticeship - the course focuses on practical activity but also includes some written theory and portfolio building. It consists of the following for the NVQ to be obtained from work: conform to general workplace safety, conform to work activities & resources. Develop & maintain good working relationships and confirm the occupational method of work. The site route includes - install first & second fixing components. Plus one of the following, erect structural carcassing or complex components, or maintain non structural & structural components, or set up and use fixed or transportable machinery. The bench joinery route provides - produce, mark out & manufacture routine and complex shaped objects.
Minimum age of 16 years. Completed secondary education, self motivated with a keen interest in the industry. In suitable employment. To achieve a satisfactory level in the diagnostic test. Entry by: Interview
