The course offers an opportunity to study why some people adopt 'deviant' lifestyles or make criminal choices; however, the course is not narrowly confined to crime and deviance but explores wider psychological issues relating to health and lifestyles, leisure, sexuality, adolescence and personal behaviour; students also consider how crime might be prevented, and acquire the interpersonal skills to work with offenders, victims and others in the criminal justice and community safety fields; the emphasis is on analysis, explanation and interpretation; key themes include understanding deviance and control, personality and social influences on behaviour, gender and crime, strategies for helping others, media influences on criminal behaviour, youth and delinquency, and race and crime.
