This course focuses on criminological theories about punishment and causation of crime, but also on crimes of the powerful, and the way in which the criminal justice responds to crime; this includes detailed exploration of the use of prisons and community sentences, the way in which young offenders are dealt with, and the specific effect criminal justice intervention has on women, ethnic minorities and the mentally disordered.
Modules include: Crime; drugs and alcohol; crime; mental illness and dangerousness; crimes of the powerful; criminal justice; policy and practice; gender and crime; prisons (past and future); responding to crime 1 and 2; understanding crime; young offenders and youth justice; plus dissertation.
