Year 1: Separation science; introduction to chemical engineering; skills for chemists; inorganic chemistry; mathematics for chemists; instrumental theory; physical chemistry; organic chemistry; introductory biochemistry or introduction to polymer chemistry; chemistry laboratory. Year 2: Chromatography; inorganic chemistry; mathematics for chemists; organic chemistry; physical chemistry; statistics; chemistry laboratory; molecular spectroscopy; options in biochemistry or chemical engineering or polymer chemistry. Year 3: Optional placement period. Year 4: Inorganic chemistry; organic chemistry; physical chemistry; production management; chemometrics; project; options in biochemistry or chemical engineering or polymer chemistry. Year 3 (Europe) option: Students take language units in Years 1, 2 and the final year instead of other options. Currently on offer are: French (post-GCSE) and beginners German, Russian and Spanish. Students spend the third year studying at a higher education institution in mainland Europe (through the SOCRATES-ERASMUS exchange scheme), with the possibility of an industrial placement.
