Course Description
Modules in year one focus upon the specialist skills and techniques used in areas such as ceramic, jewellery and textile crafts, including embroidery, hand knit printed surfaces and leather crafts. Research skills will be developed through the study of historical and contemporary trends, and related business expertise required to work in the creative industries will be integrated with practice. Students will be encouraged to determine their own niche specialism in year 2, and work experience opportunities will include live project work, periods of placement with practitioners and participation in trade fairs. This practically baaed programme provides varied experience of a wide range of specialist areas of applied arts for those keen to pursue a career within the design and crafts industries. Alongside an exciting modular structure of learning through making, students will be introduced to the contemporary world of applied arts, underpinned by historical, critical and professional studies. The programme will be delivered over 2 years full-time or in part-time modes, providing flexible opportunities for those seeking employment, self employment through new enterprises, or for students wishing to pursue further study to complete an honours degree.
