Course Description
This is a foundation/entry level course. It is for those who enjoy being with and caring for animals and would like to gain employment in the animal industry. We are looking for students who love animals and want to know more about them. The units studied are: Animal Care (4 hours a week); Large Animal Care (three hours a week); Dog Training (two hours a week); IT (two hours a week); Basic Skills - Literacy (one hour a week); Basic Skills - Numeracy (one hour a week); Interview Skills (one hour a week); Health and Safety (two hours a week); Working Together (two hours a week). The course has one hour a week for tutorial support. Students are expected to work with a variety of animals such as: Exotic: snakes, lizards, frogs, toads, terrapins, tortoises, chinchillas and birds; Rodent: guinea pigs, rats, mice, gerbils and hamsters; Companion: dogs, cats and rabbits; Large animals: horses, goats and sheep. The emphasis will be on the development of practical skills in handling and caring for animals. The development of basic skills is also an essential feature of the course. Time is also allocated for the student to improve their social skills, so that they are prepared for the workplace and are able to work with other people. Students who are successful in gaining this award could progress to the First Diploma in Animal Care or gain employment in the animal care industry.
Assessment method
Assessment: Module written exams 80% and coursework 20%. Two written papers (one of 1hr 15m, 1 of 2hrs) and two pieces of coursework.
Entry Requirements
Applicants with F, G or ungraded GCSEs are invited to apply.
Equipment and Materials
Students are required to have a scientific calculator, a transparent plastic rule (30cm) and a protractor, as well as usual writing instruments
