An animal that is fed well should be given just enough of the correct foods so that it can realise its production potential. Feeding more than necessary can be both wasteful and uneconomical; and can lead to health problems in the livestock. The better farmer will feed at the 'optimum level' (ie. just enough (but not more) that is need for optimum production).
