The course covers the history and material culture of Greece and Rome; students study Greek culture and society, Roman culture and society, and Greek and Roman History; students can choose Latin or Ancient Greek.
Year 1: Core modules: Greek culture and society; Roman culture and society; options: either Greek language for beginners; or Greek language and literature; or Greek literary texts; either Latin language for beginners; or Latin language and literature; or Latin literary texts; either introduction to ancient philosophy; or introduction to Greek and Roman history. Year 2: Core modules: Hellenistic world; 3 options from the following including at least 2 from list A: list A: Alexander the Great; art and architecture of Asia Minor; city of Rome; democracy and imperialism in classical Greece; domestic space in the Roman world; early Christianity; food and drink in the ancient Mediterranean; Greek and Roman coinage; principles and methods in classical archaeology; Roman Britain; warfare in the ancient world; the world of late antiquity; transformation of Roman society under Augustus; approved option; list B: Latin language and literature; Latin literary texts; Horace: odes; Greek language; Greek literary texts; Greek language and literature; art and death in Neronian culture; classical views of visual art and literature; epic and epyllion; Greek comedy; Greek tragedy; origins of the modern novel; Roman comedy; sexuality and gender in the Greek world; Aristotle; pre-Socratic philosophy; Greek ethics.
