The degree programme has an emphasis on ancient history; students are also encouraged to take advantage of the range of expertise in the department and explore later historical periods; the programme offers a wide variety of courses spanning extraordinary chronological breadth and geographical range; resources, including the British museum and British library, are within walking distance, and other London-based museums and organisations provide opportunities for accessing primary source material.
Year 1: Compulsory foundation courses: concepts and categories; reading history. All years: Students choose options, guided by a tutor, from a list of nearly 200 history papers in the department including: ancient Near-Eastern history; Greek history; Roman history; Hellenistic history; medieval history; ancient languages (Latin, Greek, Akkadian); Celtic history; Persian history. All courses for history (V100) and ancient history (V110) are available to students of both degrees.
