Core module in: methods in cultural analysis (examining key theoretical debates in American literature and culture); 1 module of independent study developing skills necessary for the dissertation, chosen from a range of options including: Fiction (19th-century, contemporary, southern); relations between literature and science; African-American literature; film noir; art, art criticism and visual culture since 1945; heritage sites, historical and postmodern landscapes; cultural theory and cultural memory; Anglo-American modernism; trauma theory; Beat Generation; plus Faculty of Humanities research training programme; and a dissertation of 20,000-25,000 words.
