Best course out there for aspiring Designer/Makers
Decorative Arts BA (Hons)
by DoraTheExplorer - June 2013

If you want to try out lots of different types of working and materials, this is the course for you. You have near unlimited access to workshops and tutors try to help you develop skills that can be used in the future. 1st YEAR - You are taught basic skills in print making, mould making and casting, wood work, metal working, jewellery, ceramics and glass. These mini projects encourage you to research those materials and artists/designer/makers using them. Through doing this, you may find other techniques you want to try, and tutors and technicians are always available to advise you. The majority of materials will be covered during your workshops in this year. If you wish to create additional pieces you will have to pay for your own materials. Generally from the 2nd year onwards you will have to buy your own materials. Lectures consist of 20th century design history and a 2-3000 word essay. 2nd YEAR ? Projects are more focused on real life briefs, eg. designing pieces or collections for a gallery shop, for mass production or commissions.Optional workshops are held to help you develop more in-depth skills for certain areas. Lectures - on the business aspects of wanting to sell your own work, and set yourself up in business. There is also a short presentation to do, and a business plan. 3rd YEAR- consists of your own project brief. The year is spent investigating a number of possible solutions, design ideas, production processes etc before you make a final collection for the degree show. A dissertation or business plan is also required. Facilities - are excellent, although can get a little crowded. Course Staff - Excellent. Each has a wealth of experience and knowledge in their field. Work hard and be polite to them, they will do the same for you in return. Mostly you have to remember that this is a course where you have to get up and do it for yourself - you need to make it what you want it to be, and you have plenty of opportunity to do that.

Fantastic!
Decorative Arts BA (Hons)
by Brittany - June 2013

I enjoyed every minute of this course. In the first year I was able to experiement with lots of materials and then specialise into my favourite. The facilities are excellent and there is plenty of work space. The tutors are really helpful, there is one for each of the areas e.g., glass, metal, ceramics and then there are technicians as well who are always there to help. You have one tutorial a week which consists of a group of you discussing your work and ideas with a tutor and then the tutors are always around if you want to talk to them one-on-one. This course is mainly practical based with only a couple of lectures a week which suited me. I graduated last year and have now gone on to a career in art & design as a designer-maker. Since leaving the uni I am still in touch with all of my tutors and technicians and they couldn't be any more helpful. Without this course I wouldn't be where I am now! Thanks for a fantastic 3 years!
