About

J. C. Rook & Sons

J. C. ROOK & SONS

JC Rook and Sons are a well established family run business who have been trading in Kent for over 40 years. We have 15 shops operating throughout east and mid Kent with our own production and distribution facility as well as food services department for supplying restaurants, schools, hotels and pubs. We employ around 220 staff.

The Rook family has had a connection with the meat trade since the 18th century, originating in and around Norfolk. Joseph Christmas Rook, a butcher since leaving school(except during the war when he joined the RAF),opened the first JC Rook and Sons in Dover, with two of his sons, Michael and Roger, in 1965. In a small room above the shop, they made all their own pies , pasties and sausages. Within 14 months they had become so successful, opening another 3 shops in Ramsgate,Broadstairs and Deal that two other brothers, John and Peter, opened a separate factory to produce the manufactured goods for the shops. In 1968 the youngest son Joe, on his 21st birthday, was welcomed into the partnership. Over the next few years the company slowly expanded, branching out right across Kent.

Joseph Christmas retired in 1975, as now have all his sons, and the company is managed and run by three of his grandsons, Chris, Andrew and Paul with excellent support from Michaels brother in-law, Philip Pellatt.

We have built our reputation on providing high quality meat and customer service at fair prices. Indeed, we regularly test our credentials with independent customer feedback from the mystery shopping experts at Shopper Anonymous Kent. Over the past several years we have worked with Kentish farmers and suppliers as well as producing some of our own beef on land near Fowlmead Country Park in Deal, to provide Kentish meat and produce in our shops.

This not only helps other Kent businesses but also gives our customers confidence in the food they eat as well as reducing food miles travelled. We are also proud to have 100% biodegradable packaging and were (we believe) the first company in Kent to introduce a charge for plastic carrier bags in an attempt to encourage our customers to reduce,re-use and re-cycle.Any money raised in this way is donated to charity. We also have speed limiters on all our delivery vehicles and JC Rook and Sons are committed to reducing the impact their business has on the environment.

Over the years J.C.Rook & Sons has won many awards for home made sausages and pies and are especially proud of being a 2008 finalist in the UKTV Local Food Hero Award.
