Course Description
Have you got a wall that needs repairing or perhaps you would just like to know how to build one from scratch? Dry stone walls stand for decades and the Peak District is particularly lucky to enjoy miles and miles of them. You may be thinking of taking up this craft seriously and achieving qualifications with a view to gaining employment. A single weekend will teach you the basic principles of the craft. During the weekend you will take down a wall and rebuild it from the foundations to the coping stones. Your instructor is a professional dry stone waller with many years of teaching and working experience. He or she will explain the techniques of the craft but you will need a lot of practice to become a competent waller. There are weekends on two different sites, gritstone and limestone. You should learn about both types of stone if you are planning to take the craft seriously. If you decide that you would like to gain a qualification then we recommend at least four weekends of instruction in addition to practising on your own walls. This should give you enough skills to attempt the Level 1 LANTRA test which involves both quality and speed - your instructor will be able to assess and advise you. Developing your skills further to include other features such as cheek ends and slopes will enable you to go for a Level 2 qualification - the minimum recommended if you are thinking of employment in the craft.
