Course Qualification: MSc in African Studies
Course Venue: Oxford University , Oxfordshire, OX1 2JD
Course Description
The MSc in African Studies is a three-term, nine-month course. It is designed to serve both as a stand-alone introduction to important debates about Africa, and as a preparation year for subsequent doctoral research on Africa. We welcome applications from students who have had experience in developing countries, and applicants need not have specialist training. The programme provides an excellent foundation for those preparing to work for government, NGOs, the media, or in other professional pursuits that require an in-depth knowledge of Africa's political, economic and social processes. However, staff at the African Studies Centre supervise theses across a range of departments and students can therefore continue to work with the same supervisor. Students will be able to start their doctoral research over the summer following completion of their Master's.

Assessment method
The MSc is structured around two core courses. The first is a weekly seminar over two terms covering key questions in African History and Politics, and giving close attention to contemporary issues. The second core course examines research methodologies and strategies, including the politics of researching and writing on Africa. In addition, students will take an optional paper, chosen from a wide selection of courses, on a particular theme and within a specific discipline. Finally, students will write a research dissertation of 10,000 words. A 5,000-word essay must accompany the research dissertation on methodology, historiography or theory. The dissertation may form the basis for doctoral research for those students who wish to proceed to a DPhil. Students who complete the degree to a sufficient standard can transfer to a doctoral programme in a disciplinary department, such as Politics and International Relations, History, Anthropology or Geography. There is at present no doctoral programme in any Area Studies centre at the University of Oxford.
