Course Description
Research activities comprise aerospace vehicle design and both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental studies. Aerodynamic studies cover the full speed range of low-speed, transonic, supersonic and hypersonic flows as well as turbulence and flow control. Non-aerospace application areas include biomedical fluid dynamics, marine technology, road vehicle aerodynamics, wave loading on offshore structures and wind energy. Many of the staff are internationally recognised in these areas. Experimental facilities include a range of wind tunnel and water flumes which are equipped with measurement techniques such as hot-wire and laser-Doppler anemometry, particle image velocimetry, planar laser scattering, laser induced fluorescence, rapid response pressure and heat transfer instrumentation, six-component force balances, Schlieren and electron beam fluorescence instrumentation. Research in computational fluid dynamics is supported through two departmental clusters, a high performance Beowulf cluster as well as high performance university and national facilities.

Entry Requirements
The College looks for the Master's degree as a pre-requisite for research degree study, although exceptional candidates holding the Bachelor's degree only may be considered. A candidate might be required to satisfy qualifying conditions before being allowed to register. All research students are registered for the degree of MPhil in the first instance. After at least a year and after passing a transfer examination, a research student may be transferred to the degree of PhD, with the date of PhD registration being backdated to the date of initial registration for the MPhil.
