This course qualifies students to work in the post-compulsory sector (e.g further education, adult and community education, prisons or work-based learning); it is designed for practising teachers of adult numeracy who do not yet hold a recognised teaching qualification; it gives students the chance to gain the skills required for teaching learners above the ages of 14 (more commonly 16) based on a sound understanding of theories of learning as applied to students own subject specialism.
Year 1: Students study with a subject-specific group of developing teachers; they deepen their understanding of numeracy as a subject area; this includes knowledge of key questions, theories and concepts in the subject, as well as the development of personal skills in the subject area; they extend repertoire of learning and teaching methods and strategies in the subject, and develop understanding of the diverse needs of learners; students consider how the theories of learning and assessment can be applied to the teaching of the subject; they are encouraged to analyse and critique policies and practices relating to the teaching of the subject, and to develop own considered approach to teaching numeracy. Year 2: students study alongside those planning to teach other subjects at post-16 (from leisure and tourism to music technology and beyond); they look at broader issues in post-compulsory education, learning and teaching from their perspective as a subject specialist, and work on projects with course participants from their own and other subject areas.
