This course is offered on a non-modular basis; applications must be made directly to the provider; in the 1st year students study with a subject-specific group of developing teachers and deepen their understanding of literacy as a subject area; this includes knowledge of key questions, theories and concepts in their subject, as well as the development of their own personal skills in the subject area; students extend their repertoire of learning and teaching methods and strategies in their subject, and develop understanding of the diverse needs of learners; students consider how the theories of learning and assessment can be applied to the teaching of their subject, are encouraged to analyse and critique policies and practices relating to the teaching of their subject, and develop their own considered approach to teaching literacy; in the 2nd year of the course, students study alongside those planning to teach other subjects at post-16 (from leisure and tourism to music technology and beyond); students look at broader issues in post-compulsory education, learning and teaching from their perspective as a subject specialist, and work on projects with course participants from their own and other subject areas.
