About this course

Administration Level 1 As an administrator, you are expected to offer a range of office skills to cover a number of routine and basic duties. At a beginner’s level, these may include: • Mail handling (dealing with post coming in and going out of the company) • Making and receiving telephone calls to include leaving and taking messages • Using office equipment: photocopier, scanner, shredder, laminator binder, printer; filing documents (paper based and electronic) • Dealing with visitors and reception work • Writing and keying in business documents such as letters and short manuscripts using industry standard layouts Being organised and able to prioritise work is something which administrators need to be good at, so time is spent on developing these skills. Being a team player and fitting in is also very important and activities are planned to help the would-be administrator become more confident and able to cope in the work environment. The Certificate in Administration (Business Professional) at level 1 is made up of credit values to a total of 13. Unit assessment to cover theory and practical tasks takes place in College lessons although tutor observations of students working well on work experience are used to enhance the assignments which are sent to OCR, the examining body for moderation. Text Processing (Business Professional) Level 1 Award Fast and accurate data input at a computer keyboard is important in every job. This saves valuable time and money for an employer and gives a professional image when working in the public eye, for example, as a receptionist. The opportunity to learn to type quickly and accurately, that is touch type (without looking at the keys) is offered and then work moves on to cover professional layout using the basic functions of WORD. Touch typing is to be highly recommended as a good grounding at the beginners’ stage will help committed students to achieve accurate typing speeds in excess of 50 words per minute (advanced). The syllabus includes producing: • Business letters using a layout to industry standards • Basic business documents for example, an advertisement, short report menu, or poster Time is spent learning how to use WORD to: • Use manuscript correcting and editing signs eg insertion/deletion/transposing • Emphasise text using bold, underscore, font and pitch • Use line spacing consistently and correctly • Insert and resize a picture • Insert a file name and path to be able to find documents quickly • Fill in a form • Create files, folders and sub folders to be able to access saved work easily and quickly (file management) • Store and recall new and saved documents • Create a multi column table • Move, copy and paste text • Adjust margins
