Department of Teaching & Lecturing (Itt) + Access

About this course

You will study some level 2 modules: Introduction to Study Techniques; Introduction to English Language; and Introduction to Word Processing, Internet and Email.

You will also study a range of level 3 modules: Psychology; Creative writing; Education; English Language and Literature; and H.E Toolkit (which will take you through your university application and interviews, show you how to research and how to give a presentation.)

If you need a GCSE in English or GCSE maths in addition to the Access Diploma, (some universities ask for them for some degrees) you can opt to study an additional GCSE English equivalent module. GCSE maths is also offered by this college and you can apply for this at Learner Services.

Alternatively, some universities will accept level 2 Adult Literacy and Numeracy qualifications instead of GCSEs. You will be given the opportunity to take these qualifications whilst you are on your Access course.

Additional entry requirements

If you do not have these qualifications, you will be assessed using the results of computer-based initial assessments in Literacy and Numeracy.

In addition, all applicants will be required to complete a 500 word pre-course task to a satisfactory standard, a hand-written personal profile and attend an interview. This application process is intended to ensure that this is the right level of course for you.

Life and work experience is valuable and applicants need to have spent some time out of school and be mature. Universities expect Access to HE applicants, for many degrees, to have some relevant experience obtained through employment or voluntary work. For example, if you are aiming for a teaching degree, you will need to have done some voluntary or paid work in a school.
