Aberystwyth University Overview
Aberystwyth provides a well balanced range of academic interests in three faculties: Arts and Social Sciences and Science and an ideal setting for postgraduate study. The beautiful surroundings of Aberystwyth certainly offer the perfect respite from academic work. The University is at the heart of a relaxed and friendly community where crime is rare, yet it is within easy reach of major cities and airports.
The town of Aberystwyth is located on the beautiful shores of Cardigan Bay on the west coast of Wales. The town has a population of about 13,500 people, but serves a local population of about 27,000. However, Aberystwyth is very much a university town with a thriving cosmopolitan postgraduate community.
The area around the University is unspoilt and abounds in natural attractions with many opportunities for outdoor activities. We’re located at the edge of the Snowdonia National Park and the Pembrokeshire National Park, Britain’s only coastal National Park.
The main campus, Penglais, is probably the most spectacularly located in Britain, with panoramic views of the town, the coastline and the Irish Sea. The proximity of the town to the campuses means that everything is within walking distance. Most students live within 15 minutes` walk of the heart of the campus and as a result the extra-curricular and social life of the campus is very student oriented.
Aberystwyth is very fortunate to have the National Library of Wales, one of the great copyright libraries, adjacent to the Campus. It contains over 4 million printed volumes and houses manuscripts, archives, pictures, photographs, posters, radio and TV recordings, films, videotapes, CDs etc. Only a few other universities can offer such easy access to every copyright publication in the UK.
