English Language and Literature at A Level requires you to study Language and Literature in an integrated way not as separate subjects. The AS course is made up of two coursework tasks (40% of the total grade) and a 90 minute exam (60% of the total). Year 1 AS Unit 1: Introduction to Language and Literature Study. You will study the AQA anthology of texts which is issued by the exam board to each student. The texts are all related to the theme of Travel and Transport. During the year students will look at the differences between a wide range of texts, including literature and study how they are written, including the writer's purpose and the audience they are intended for. AS Unit 2: Themes in Language and Literature. For this coursework unit students will study the following two novels from different periods: 'In Cold Blood' by Truman Capote and 'Frankenstein' by Mary Shelley. Students study the theme of Wasted Lives in the two novels. The first assignment is to write a piece in which they examine two extracts from the novels showing an understanding of the theme and comparing the novels and the writers' approaches and methods. The second assignment is to use one or both of the set texts as the basis for a piece of creative writing which extends the ideas in the first assignment. Year 2 A2 Unit 3: Talk in Life and Literature. This unit emphasises spoken language and students will study the complex ways in which we use and create talk in real life as well as in literature. A2 Unit 4: Text Transformation. The text transformation is one of the most challenging and exciting parts of the course. It combines detailed textual study with creative and original writing in a way which often produces the best work in the course. Students have to study 2 texts from a range of authors and produce a coursework folder consisting of either two separate transformations or a longer combined one. They need to show detailed knowledge and understanding of the texts in their transformations and have to produce a detailed commentary on their own work in which they explain how they used the original texts.
