Indian music is traditional and modern, classical and contemporary, and has richness and depth in its melodies and rhythms. This course gives participants of all ages, backgrounds and levels an introduction to Indian Classical Music and will aim to cover the origins of raag (melody) and taal (rhythm), the aroha (ascending) and avaroha (descending) characteristics of raag, the use of rhythmic cycles in Indian music, composition and melodic and rhythmic improvisation. Our tutors, the internationally renowned tabla maestro Sanju Sahai and Dharambir Singh, a prominent sitar player and course leader based in the UK, will also help participants understand how Indian music works with other musical genres. Please bring your own (western) instrument with you if you have one.
