This course is for those who have a real interest in the English legal system and who wish to gain a thorough and detailed understanding of law; perhaps in preparation for study at degree level. It covers the following module 1: law making and the legal system, includes such topics as: the different ways in which law is created, the sources of law, the various influences that lead to a change in law by parliament, how the legal system works which includes a study of the court system and the personnel involved (the judges and lawyers) and how legal representation may be obtained; module 2: the concept of liability, is a study of the basics of criminal law and the civil law on negligence (tort) which includes such topics as: what is required to be guilty of a crime; in particular non fatal offences against the person, what is required for a successful civil action in negligence, criminal sentencing and civil sanctions are also studied. students will specialise in particular areas of criminal law including murder, manslaughter, non fatal offences against the person; theft; robbery; burglary; fraud; and possible defences and will also study the concepts of law: law and morality; law and justice; balancing conflicting rights; fault; and judicial creativity. They may progress to study at under-graduate level for an LLB in law.
Students must have five GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths. GCSE English Language is required at Grade B or above.
