This course is for those who are interested in gaining a thorough theoretical understanding of how language can be used to make meaning in many different texts; those interested in gaining practical skills in creative writing; those who enjoy reading and are motivated to develop as informed and independent readers and critics of all kinds of texts spoken and written, literary and non-literary. Students will study a demanding, wide-ranging selection of texts and gain integrated skills of both literary and linguistic analysis. They will also respond creatively to texts and produce their own original writing. It consists of the following introduction to language and literature study, themes in language and literature, talk in life and literature, text transformation. It will help prepare them for a wide range of subjects in the creative and social science area at degree level, including English literature, drama, law, history, and sociology.
