About this course

You will need to be assessing candidates who are working towards an NVQ or work-based qualification which contains performance criteria, and requires portfolio building to prove competencies. You will need to have at least 2 years occupational competence, shown through your current work experience or from NVQ qualifications. You will also need to prove your Continuing Professional Development twice a year, through health and safety, lifting and handling workshops etc. We cannot supply candidates for you. You will need to work-shadow the NVQ candidate s occupationally competent assessor, so that you can discover their skills and the paperwork involved prior to coming on to this course. You will also need to attend standardization meetings with them to ensure standardisation of assessment is applied within your occupational area. We will provide you with an A1 qualified assessor to work with you on a one-to-one basis, to guide you through the evidence you need to prove your competency in assessment. Usually one-to-one attendance is held at the College, at a day and time convenient to you. However, reviews may be held in the workplace, if there are a number of A1 assessors on the course. Reviews are usually at 3 to 4 weekly intervals, for about an hour, but there is some flexibility in allowing for more frequent visits. Workplace assessment will also take place, so we can observe your performance in giving feedback to your candidate. The qualification is a City and Guilds Assessor qualification, comprising of 4 elements assessment planning, judging evidence, providing feedback and contributing to internal quality process. You will build a portfolio of evidence supporting the assessments that you have carried out with your candidates: observation, questioning, authenticated witness statements and candidate personal statements etc. You will need a minimum of 2 assessors, preferably of differing abilities. You will need to assess a minimum of two full units for each candidate, totalling 4 units one of these units will need to be internally verified by the occupational IV. You will attend a 2 hour induction which will involve clarifying the role of the assessor. You will work through a role play activity of assessment planning, and receive a pack with standards, proforma documents and detailed guidance to enable you to put your portfolio together and to get started immediately. After enrolment, you will be allocated your assessor to work with you on a one-to-one basis. You will develop a good knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the assessment requirements for the A1, and how to provide feedback, authentication and validation of evidence. Feedback from the assessor will also provide an integral learning mechanism. You will attend a 2 hour induction which will involve clarifying the role of the assessor.
