Course Description
The course covers the first half of the 20th-century. The pre-War decades of the 20th century entrenched ideas of social progress, modernity in industrialised western democracies, and artistic autonomy but World War 1 disrupted avant-garde optimism. Post-war disillusionment introduced a new sense of reality and irrationality into art movements and promoted self-referential abstraction.
