Course Description
Course is for anyone with an interest in developing their knowledge and understanding of English literature. It will give some idea of what it means to study literature at University and give experience of how academic critics discuss poetry and prose. Lectures will focus on famous examples of Victorian poetry and determine how it both describes and develops our ideas of nineteenth century culture and society. In addition to the poetry there will be discussion of Jane Eyre and Dracula, two novels, one famous, the other infamous for a whole range of reasons ranging from debates about Empire to sexual politics. Course offers the opportunity to participate in actual degree course lectures along with current students.
