Awarding organisations for psychotherapy training courses

  • General Hypnotherapy Standards Council
  • As part of the Working Group for Hypnotherapy Regulation (WGHR), the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC) offers hypnotherapy training courses at various levels, from diplomas to degrees. All GHSC courses are designed with adherence to relevant National Occupational Standards for Hypnotherapy as prescribed by Skills for Health, with an appropriate ratio of face to face training and teaching through other methods. The council is made up of hypnotherapy professionals as well as an advisory board with members of the general public and together they agree on how to assess students taking hypnotherapy training courses.

  • International NLP Trainers Association
  • The International NLP Trainers Association (INLPTA) is a membership body for professionals working in NLP (neuro –linguistic programming) and they strive to uphold the highest possible standards of quality and professionalism in the NLP sector. INLPTA has provided accreditation to NLP Trainers from an international network of countries including the UK, the US, Australia, South Africa, the Netherlands and Sweden. Qualifications offered by the INLPTA include the diploma and the master practitioner award, as well as teacher training. INLPTA also offers coaching qualifications.

  • UK Council for Psychotherapy
  • A membership body, the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) accredits and registers psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors in the UK.  The Council has more than 7,000 therapists and counsellors in practice listed and more than 75 training centres. Registered counsellors must go through an intensive postgraduate training in order to work with patients with mental illnesses. The UK Council for Psychotherapy awards the European Certificate of Psychotherapy (ECP) and trains psychotherapists to be qualified to practice in the region of Europe. 

  • British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
  • BACP accredited courses offer quality training to a high standard as recognised by employers, colleagues and prospective clients. Their graduates may apply to join the BACP Register without undertaking any further assessment and have completed the minimum training required for BACP accreditation as a counsellor/psychotherapist.

  • Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body
  • The Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) represents the interests of those working in the counselling field – from professional counsellors to trainers and supervisors. In addition to practitioner level qualifications, CPCAB also offers qualifications in areas such as counselling supervision, listening and helping skills, and understanding substance misuse. With 130 recognised training centres in the UK, CPCAB provides qualifications from level s 1 to 6. The vocational programmes are also supported by Skills for Health.
