Undergraduate Student Story: Illustration Why study Undergraduate Illustration

Adam’s certainly not short of inspiration as he studies illustration in the picturesque city of Cardiff…

Name: Adam Travers
Course: BA (Hons) Illustration
Institution: Cardiff School of Art & Design, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff

'I’m in my third year of study here. I looked at several art schools, but this one stood out because you don’t already need to know everything. You can come to CSAD with a bit of skill and expand on that. There are quite  a few famous success stories from Cardiff as well – it’s inspiring to know.

Our lecturers are always there for students, and friends always tell me their tutors are happy to help as well. One tutor gave me a tutorial via Skype when he was in Canada – that’s dedication for you!

Here, they hate the word ‘style’ – you might develop one as you go but that’s not your main aim. Tutors tell us not to look for the commercial world, because they’ll find you. You focus on your work.

The city itself is lovely. There are lots of arcades, old buildings and the parks. You forget you’re in the city for a while. I’m definitely staying.

With companies like tactileBOSCH  [a gallery and studios that aims to give opportunities to recent graduates, as well as showcasing local and international artists] and Chapter [an arts complex that features a gallery, cinema and more] based in Cardiff, I’ve made a lot of professional contacts. There are a lot more opportunities here because the course and the industry are up-and-coming in this area.'
