Undergraduate Student Story: Creative Writing Why study Undergraduate Creative Writing

Nuala highly recommends the English and Creative Writing course that she is currently enjoying at Newport University…

Name: Nuala Sutton
Course: BA (Hons) English and  Creative Writing
Institution: Newport University

‘Studying English and Creative Writing at Newport’s University has been absolutely brilliant so far. Over the past two years I have been given plenty of opportunities to hone my writing skills in different mediums, from writing short pieces of fiction, to poetry and scripts. The creative writing side of my course has already benefited me in terms of my future career plans and ambitions.

As part of the course, we are also given the opportunity to speak with an array of published writers, as well as people working in different industries, including the BBC. This has been particularly worthwhile, as it makes graduating seem less scary and the prospect of making a living from writing seem possible.

By combining Creative Writing with English, we are given the chance to appreciate great writers, from Shakespeare to modern-day writers by studying the technique and craft of their work. The modules cover  a wide range of cultures, which makes for a really interesting course.

At Newport it’s definitely not just about taking down notes. We’re encouraged to take an active part in discussions and presentations, and get plenty of opportunities to choose which areas we wish to pursue.'

The tutors have been fantastic. They’re always there if I need them and work all year round to ensure students reach their potential. I’d recommend the English and Creative Writing BA course here to anyone.’
