Marco DeVito proudly tells Hotcourses about training and working as a physiotherapist and running his own physio company…
Name: Rosario Marco DeVito (Marco)
Job description: Senior Physiotherapist
“I’m the Managing Director of Marcophysio Limited, my own company. I studied for a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science at London South Bank University and also have a BSc in Physiotherapy from King’s College, London. My first real job in the field of physiotherapy was at the Institute of Physiotherapy in Turin, Italy, which is one of the largest institutions in Europe dedicated to physiotherapy and development.
I’m passionate about my job; to me, there’s nothing more satisfying than helping people get better. I enjoy following my clients through the different stages of rehabilitation, from the very early days of their injury to their full return to health. This may sound like a cliché, but I would advise anyone wanting to be a physiotherapist to pursue their dream and not to give up. I did two degrees to finally arrive at my passion for physiotherapy. Being a physiotherapist is not just about getting your qualification – it’s about hard work, tenacity, innovating new techniques, and staying interested in new industry practices and treatments.
Networking is also crucial. Attend seminars, events, join internet groups, start making friends and you never know who will contact you or give you the support you need. You have to be passionate about physiotherapy. You have to have outstanding social skills and the ability to meet and talk to all kinds of people. Treat all patients with professionalism, dignity and respect. For those who find it difficult to get a job immediately, my advice is offer yourself to firms for voluntary work and ask them if you can do a work experience placement. When I started meeting the right people, it got my foot in the door!
Now I run several successful practices and I treat a few A-list celebrities and sports personalities. However, the most exciting aspect of my job is seeing results and receiving people’s positive feedback on a daily basis. To see improvements that were inconceivable only a few weeks earlier makes it all worthwhile! I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. I couldn’t ask for more!”
