Tony’s cookery studies have been a major success story – he is now a cookery inspiration for staff and students, and also turns his hand to foodie journalism…
Name: Dardan ‘Tony’ Hadergionai
Course: City and Guilds Level 2 Professional Cookery
Institution: Kensington and Chelsea College
Tony came to the UK in the mid-1990s as a refugee from Kosovo. He came to Kensington and Chelsea College to do an ESOL course but it was not long before he discovered the Food Studies department and joined an ESOL with Cookery course. Tony threw himself into his studies, helping the tutor and getting involved wherever possible. He was soon asked if he would like to work part-time as a kitchen technician at KCC, which he did in addition to a chef’s job in a busy central London pub. Four years ago, he started to work full time as Head Technician at Kensington and Chelsea College, which he continues to do today.
Tony has studied and passed a variety of courses while at KCC, including City and Guilds Level 2 Professional Cookery, LOCN Level 3 Advanced Culinary Techniques, LOCN Pastry Skills, LOCN Vegetarian Cookery and a written English course. He is currently studying cake decoration. For Tony, studying at KCC was an opportunity to start a new life here in the UK. ‘Coming to Kensington and Chelsea College was the best thing I could have done for myself,’ he said. Now a fluent English speaker, Tony’s enthusiasm has rubbed off on the staff and students at KCC. He now writes a cookery column for The Albanian newspaper and has just started a column in Emigrant magazine.
