1 Q. What qualifications route did you take to realise your career?
I have a degree in Business Administration and I’m a Chartered Accountant with the ACCA. I also have extensive experience working for various organisations including charities.
2 Q. Please explain what students will learn during your course
All areas of what makes a business work! This includes Finance and Accounting, Human Resource Management, Customer Service, Marketing, Business law, and Economics. We introduce learners to all the areas in business and management so they can decide which area they want to specialise in. They also learn the skills needed to run their ‘own business’.
3 Q. What’s the first thing you teach your students?
I get them to think about how a business actually works. Then it’s down to the practical things like how to manage themselves, how to communicate effectively in business, presentation skills, teamwork and the role subjects such as Maths, English and IT play in business today.
4 Q. What qualities do you need to succeed in your industry?
You have to be professional and demonstrate that you have qualities that will make you employable. You must be punctual, reliable, responsible, able to work with others and to adapt to a changing business environment.
5 Q. What are the benefits of studying your subject?
Students can progress into employment or to further education. You gain the skills to work in any organisation (eg. Bank, Charity, School). You will also gain the skills needed to start and run your own business.
6 Q. Please explain why you love your subject
I love business studies because you can apply the same principles everywhere – Europe, Africa, Asia wherever. We live in a global market now and it’s all about how to get more for less. I enjoy teaching business!
7 Q. What skills do your students have by the end of the course?
Advanced communication, organisation, analytical and research skills. I try to get my students to think like business people; to be logical, analytical and innovative.
8 Q. What do students normally do once they’ve finished their course?
They can study the next level of their course, go on to University or employment.
9 Q. What’s the best way to go about getting a job in your industry?
Market yourself by highlighting your strengths and putting together a good CV. Create opportunities by getting an internship, apprenticeship, or taking on voluntary work.
10 Q. Can you describe a typical day in your working life?
A typical day begins at 8.30am. I lead on a range of business simulation activities similar to
dragons den and the apprentice. I finish at 5.
11 Q. What advice do you have for people interested in studying a course like yours?
It’s the door to a wide range of opportunities. Go through it and contribute positively to society.
