‘When I became a student at Bangor University four years ago, I immediately felt at home. I had never studied Psychology before, but decided to give it a go – not really knowing whether it was the right decision for me. Four years on I have completed my BSc and a master’s degree in Psychological Research, and am now gaining valuable experience working as a Research Project Support Officer, with the aim of hopefully getting funding for a PhD next year.
Like many students starting a new course, I had no idea what to expect and more to the point I had no idea where I wanted this to take me. In the course of my undergraduate degree I was inspired by many of the lecturers and their research and I became very intrigued by the psychology of language and cognitive functioning. This curiosity steered me towards completing a postgraduate degree, where I decided that it would be beneficial to study modules that would develop my existing research skills. My postgraduate research thesis embarked on a new direction in the study of bilingualism, dyslexia and executive functioning, where I was given the freedom to develop my own ideas and interests.
One of the best things about studying in Bangor is the surrounding area and its immense beauty, I couldn’t imagine myself being anywhere else, and if you really want to take full advantage of these surroundings then there is an abundance of outdoor activities that you can try, from mountain walking to kayaking. Do not despair though if ‘outdoor activities’ is a daunting turn of phrase for you, as the Student Union has so many clubs and societies that you will find whatever it is you are looking for, with everything from acting to photography available.
The modules I chose as part of my master’s course were designed to build on my undergraduate research skills, with emphasis on learning how to think more critically about research. I have now being given the opportunity to gain valuable research experience and I await and look forward to the challenges that lay ahead.’
