 A level music and Grade 8 piano followed by a foundation degree in music

Q. Please explain what students will learn during your course?
Students will learn about the whole business – from the basics of music and to how to develop individual skill through production techniques to the role of popular music in society as well as life skills.

Q. What’s the first thing you teach your students?
Self belief

Q. What qualities do you need to succeed in your industry?
Perseverance, energy, commitment, a willingness to try new ideas and the courage of your convictions.

Q. What are the benefits of studying your subject?
Working with industry standard equipment and resources to cover a range of musical styles. Our proximity to London means there are plenty of opportunities to engage with live music and the industry as well as Higher Education at some of the leading Universities in the UK.

Q. Please explain why you love your subject?
Music speaks to the soul. It offers the chance for anyone with the talent to express themselves and build a career.

Q. What skills do your students have by the end of the course?
By the end of the course, students can expect to have developed excellent performance skills through live shows, learned to write, record and produce their own work in our music labs and studios and to have gained a thorough understanding of the music industry.

Q. What do students normally do once they’ve finished their course?
Students often go in to industry, Higher Education or teaching.

Q. What’s the best way to go about getting a job in your industry?
Put yourself out there and get known. It helps to cultivate an online presence, for instance create your own website. Perform – anywhere, enter competitions and seek out backstage work.

Q. Can you describe a typical day in your working life?
It’s a mixture of theory and practical work and it varies. I may start by teaching a music business class then move on to a one to one vocal or instrumental lesson before going into a live performance or a studio recording session.

Q. What advice do you have for people interested in studying a course like yours?
Arrange to visit the college to meet the tutors and students. Look out for local gigs where we’re playing and come and hear us!
