Student Story: Massage and Sports massage Massage and Sports massage careers

From studying a whole array of part-time courses, Jennifer got the bug for sports massage in particular, and has now set up her own massage and wellbeing career and business …

Name: Jennifer Hargreaves
Institution: St Mary’s University College
Course: Anatomy and Physiology and Holistic Massage, Sports Massage

I came to St Mary’s University College in 2008 to do two short courses, Anatomy and Physiology and Holistic Massage. On Saturdays I also did Fitness Instruction leading to Level 2, which is equivalent to the YMCA qualification. As the courses ran on Monday evenings and Saturdays, I was able to continue my job in sales and marketing. These courses were just what I wanted – I enjoyed the practical side immensely. I particularly wanted to do the Fitness Instruction course for my own personal development as a triathlete.

When the first courses came to an end, my interest in massage had grown substantially and I began to consider the possibility of making a career change.  So I started a Personal Training course, which continued until June. I decided to hand in my notice and in August I did an intensive Sports Massage course.

I was informed that there was a Level 5 Sports Massage course on offer, so I signed up for that last December. Currently this involves one weekend a month and, when I complete it in the summer, it will mean that I will be qualified to massage at Olympic level.

Recently I started up my own full-time business, based in a local gym, offering a complete wellbeing package, incorporating personal training, massage, nutrition and support with business challenges. I have my own website – www.FitForBusinessCoaching.co.uk – and I stay in touch with the college. Also, my contacts with other course members have led to a number of client referrals. I am also targeting a number of big companies with a view to improving the general health and wellbeing of their employees.
