Ever wished you could turn your love of fabrics, furnitures and paint colours into a brand new career? Saemi Kim did just that, and here gives us the lowdown on the course that helped her on her way.

‘I decided to take the course to change my career from graphic design to interior design and I chose Chelsea College of Art & Design as I had a few friends that studied there.
 
I enjoyed the first class very much as the tutor, Lyndall, was really understanding and helpful. She is absolutely the best teacher I’ve ever had. She makes people feel comfortable. I enjoyed everything about the course. I especially liked that each module has one main project for you to work on, which is like working on a real project.  All the sessions were different, as we learned different skills every week.  We usually had a lecture in the morning and we developed projects (under the guidance of our tutors) in the afternoon. The whole thing was very hands-on and much more work than I had expected.

I managed to get a job as an interior designer while I was studying. The project I completed during the course went into my portfolio. I worked for the company for two years after completing the course and now I’ve set up on my own. I’m working on projects in London, Korea and Kuala Lumpur. Interior design is a very effective tool that I use to introduce different cultures into people’s homes.

If someone wanted to take a course like this, I would remind them that they have to work hard, as my course was very practical and intensive. Even though you have a class once a week, you have a lot of homework to do on your own. In the end, though, the interior design course provided me with everything I needed to be a designer.’
