Student Story: Electrical Installation Career as an electrician

Student Story: Electrical Installation

Kelly’s gone from being an office administrator to getting her hand’s dirty at the Olympics site, all thanks to her electrical installation course…

Name: Kelly Drake
Institution: Hackney Community College
Course: Electrical Installation Level 3

I used to work as an office administrator but found that wasn’t really what I wanted to do. I decided that I needed a career change. I wanted to do something which I would consider more mentally as well as physically challenging and so I thought I’d try my hand at Electrical Installation. I enrolled on the Electrical Installation course at Hackney Community College which was definitely one of the best decisions I’ve made.

I’ve learnt so much on this course and enjoy it immensely. I absolutely love the practical side of it. I get to practice running wires and connecting electricity in the college’s workshop and just develop my overall skills under the expert tutelage of our teachers.

Owing to the strong partnership that the College has with employers I also managed to land a great job working on the 2012 Olympics site in Stratford  as a trainee electrician. I work part-time while I study at college. At the moment my job is to run cables, supply temporary heating and put up temporary  lamp posts on the site.

Even though I am filthy by the end of my shifts I absolutely love working on the Olympics site. It is quite fulfilling to know that I am helping create history and prepare for such a great event. HCC has taught me a new skill and allowed me to work towards qualifications which are helping me a great deal with my performance at work and future career prospects.
