Brita Forsstrom teaches Alexander Technique at City Lit. Brita has been teaching the Alexander Technique since qualifying in 1984 in private practice, adult education and workshops in the UK and abroad. She had taught a wide variety of people including actors, musicians and runners. Brita is co-author of Alexander Technique for Pregnancy and Childbirth.

Brita trained on a full-time three-year Alexander Technique Teacher training course approved the STAT (The Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique - www.stat.org.uk) – the largest professional body of Alexander Technique teachers worldwide. She has continued her professional development by attending workshops and a PTTLS teacher training course at the City Lit.

The Alexander Technique courses at the City Lit are all basic introductions to the Technique. Students will learn how it can be applied to life in general and to the specific activities of the actor and performer (singer, musician) to help them to overcome subconscious habits that are the underlying cause of their problems such as tension, back pain, difficulty coping with stress, breathing, voice and other technical barriers to achieving their potential. They will first learn how to observe and become aware of what they do and how they react in ways that cause inappropriate tension and effort and adversely affect their posture and co-ordination. Using a combination of verbal explanations and instructions, observation and gentle hands-on guidance students will be taught how to prevent and eliminate these patterns and to restore a more efficient and natural way of using their bodies and minds in movement and everyday actions.

There are no specific requirements to start learning the Alexander Technique. The general introductory courses are open to all. The Alexander Technique for Performing Artists is open to anyone with an interest or experience in some kind of performance, from the professional or trainee actor or musicians to the school teacher, salesperson or barrister – anyone who has to ‘perform’ in their lives. The courses are very practical.

The great thing about learning the Alexander Technique is that it will be yours to keep learning and applying to learning other things.  You will learn to be poised, without stiffness – move more freely with less strain – breathe and speak more easily – be alert and focussed – calm and confident.

I love teaching the Alexander Technique because I get to work with such a range of people and at the same time continue to learn and improve in my own working and personal life. It is an endless journey of new discoveries.

By the end of the course the students will know how the Alexander Technique can help them and how to proceed both with working on their own and in one-to-one session and further group study.

Learning the Alexander Technique is fun and easy with the help of a qualified Alexander Technique teacher. It is like starting out on your own journey of discovery. You can’t know the taste of an orange without tasting it. It’s the same with Alexander Technique – you can’t know it until you experience it. Give it a try!
