Meet the Tutor: Calligraphy About calligraphy classes

Name: Anne Cox

Insitution: The Institute, East Finchley

Course: Calligraphy

Calligraphy is the art of creating beautiful lettering and writing. Used everywhere, from wedding invites to stone inscriptions, calligraphy courses look good on the CV but are also a fun and creative way to spend your free time.

Anne Cox is a calligraphy tutor at The Institute and she revealed to Hotcourses how she came to teach calligraphy to adults.

Anne was attracted to calligraphy while she was working as a primary school teacher in Enfield. She enrolled on an adult education calligraphy course in her spare time, ‘I enjoyed it so much, I went on attending for three years!’

Eventually Anne’s passion paid off and she was asked by her teacher if she would be interested in running a parallel class, ‘Though I leapt at the opportunity, I knew I needed further training.’

Anne began her Certificate in Calligraphy and Bookbinding at the Roehampton Institute and completed her diploma over two years.

On leaving college Anne was accepted onto the Society of Scribes and Illuminators’ ‘Advanced Training Scheme’ where she became a member of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI). She also belongs to the North London Lettering Association (NLLA) and is a Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS).

Anne has taught calligraphy in adult education at a variety of institutions before coming to The Institute, “I am very pleased to be teaching at The Institute and it is a pleasure to pass my skills onto such keen learners.".”

Anne’s calligraphy classes run on Monday afternoons and Monday evenings and are suitable for all levels of ability.
