This course aims to give students a general understanding of all aspects of telecommunications networks and the Internet. The course covers techniques, mechanisms, protocols and network architectures. The course starts from covering basic principles of communications systems and extends to architectural aspects and design of future packet-switched networks. Undoubtedly, the growth of mobile and wireless communication systems and networks over the last few years has been explosive. Interestingly enough, this growth is taking place all over the world in both developed and developing countries. Therefore, in this very dynamic industry the prospects of employment are significant for graduates with well-rounded knowledge of this field. The aim of the course is to provide the next generation of engineers that will manage and steer the developments in these new emerging Internet technologies.
Modules include: Digital communications; mobile and personal communications; network theory; optical communications; random variables and stochastic processing; software engineering of internet applications; telecommunications networks i; telecommunications networks ii.
A 2.1 Honours degree in electronics; electrical engineering; computer science; applied mathematics; or physics.
