Good course for the self-motivated.
by Sarah - September 2014

I have recently completed the two year Certificate of Higher Education in Global Ecology & Wildlife Conservation via distance learning with the University of Leicester. I enjoyed the content and found the assignments challenging and relevant to ecology and wildlife conservation. On the plus side the module 3 field trip was superb; marking was fair and consistent; there are opportunities to align assignments with your interests; and library services were excellent. However, the notes were out of date and with errors; the correct materials were not sent in time for the module start dates; and tutors had VERY limited availability. Communication was by far the worst problem. I advise checking whether the notes have been updated. Also, ask how much time the tutor has available, in my year it was 10 hours per module, including time to mark everyone's assignments. You can then decide if that is sufficient for your own level and whether you think that offers good value for money. Also check if you are signing up from overseas, one assignment does not seem to work outside the UK: freshwater invertebrate id during April/May based on a key published for UK species. Not much help appeared to be on offer to adapt this assignment. The course is best suited to those who have studied at this level before, as you will be expected to do research without much guidance. A high standard of writing is expected, but there is no feedback available until you have handed in the first three assignments. In my opinion, £5,590 is quite expensive for what you get. However, it is a unique course, I couldn't find anything else like it. So if you decide to go for it, enjoy it, you'll learn a lot. Just be prepared to work very much on your own, with limited support and direction from the University, and don't be surprised if communication and administration are minimal.
