Many are designed specifically for adults returning to learning who may have few or no previous qualifications and are looking to improve their skills and confidence. Subject areas include English, Maths, ICT, Counselling and Mentoring, Budgeting, Personal and Social Development (improving your mental and physical health and wellbeing), and a range of professional courses and qualifications for people working in the voluntary and community sectors. Nearly all of these courses are FREE for students claiming means-tested benefits, including accommodation and meals.
The College also offers an Access to Higher Education Diploma, a full-time 30 week course starting every September aimed at adults who want to go to University but don’t currently have the right qualifications. Success rates on the Access course at Fircroft are high - almost 20% above the national average - and the majority of students who successfully complete the course go straight to university, others change career and most describe Fircroft as a ‘life-changing experience’. The course itself is focussed on Social Sciences/Humanities, with English and Maths also covered.
