Prison Auxiliary NRL Career Details

Prison auxiliaries carry out a wide range of tasks, including security work on gates, searching or driving. They may also be involved in observation, and operating gates.

Part of the job involves observing and supervising inmates, but auxiliaries are not given sole responsibility for this.

Working Environment

The Northern Ireland Prison Service has establishments at Maghberry (near Moira), the Young Offenders Centre (Hydebank Wood, Belfast) and Magilligan (Limavady).

Prison auxiliaries work long hours, and the environment can be stressful. They must work shifts including evenings, nights and weekends. If they have to work any hours outside their scheduled shift pattern, they would then get the same amount of time off.

The auxiliary grade is ‘non-mobile’. This means auxiliaries are posted to one establishment, and will only have to move to another location if it is within reasonable travelling distance.
